How To Cook Basmati Rice

Updated: May 14

Boiling Method

Plain boiled rice is incredibly easy to prepare, but selecting the right type of rice is essential, especially when learning how to cook basmati rice. Indian cuisine typically calls for fragrant basmati rice, which offers that distinctive aroma and fluffy texture; while long grain rice can yield good results, it doesn't quite capture the true basmati fragrance. Jasmine rice is another excellent option, especially when pairing with spicy dishes. To cook plain rice, you'll need just a large pan, a few liters of water, and a pinch of salt—this process takes roughly ten minutes. For optimal results, allow the cooked rice to rest in a warm place for a few minutes, which helps the grains relax, dry out slightly, and become perfectly separated.

Plain-Boiled Rice 'Just Perfect'

Boiling is a common method to cook basmati rice, but it’s best to rinse the rice thoroughly first to remove excess starch, then soak it for about 30 minutes to ensure even cooking. When boiling, use a generous amount of water (about 4 cups of water for 1 cup of rice), bring it to a boil, add the rice, and cook uncovered until the grains are tender and fluffy, usually around 10-15 minutes. Drain any excess water and let the rice rest covered for a few minutes before fluffing with a fork. This method helps achieve the light, fluffy texture characteristic of well-cooked basmati rice.

Step 1:

Rinse the rice in cold water until the water runs clear to remove most of the starch.

Step 2:

In a large pan bring the 4 cups of water to a boil, and add the salt and butter.

Step 3:

Add the rice to the boiling water and stir to break up any clumps, then return to a boil. Cook the rice until tender, about 10-15 minutes, ensuring it remains slightly al dente; stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 4:

Remove any extra water and allow the rice to sit covered for a few minutes before fluffing it with a fork.

Step 5:

To achieve optimal results, keep the rice in a warm oven set to approximately 150°C or in a warming drawer for 30 minutes.
